The Roofing Project at St. Catherine of Siena and Bayers Road Widening

The Parish was advised that the roof on St. Catherine of Siena church was no longer insurable due to its age. To address this, the St. Catherine Building Committee worked diligently to identify a long-term solution for both the church and the rectory. After a Request for Quote was issued and the six bids submitted were reviewed, a service provider was selected.

The project will take approximately 4-6 weeks (weather depending), with the work scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 23rd. During this time, to reduce risk to our parishioners and clergy and to facilitate the work being done, the 9:00 a.m. weekday Masses on Tuesdays and Wednesday will be celebrated at St. Stephen Church. Weekend Masses remain unchanged and will be celebrated at both churches. We will work with the roofing company to ensure safe entrance to and exit from the church on weekends. Please note, there will be scaffolding erected and work happening in the church parking lot and spaces may be limited or unavailable.

In saying this, the Building Committee has ensured the roofing company adheres to all best safety practices to protect everyone.

In addition to the roofing project, the widening of Bayers Road has begun. Discussions around this between HRM and St. Catherine of Siena Church began in 2019. Five feet of church property has been expropriated; we have been financially compensated for this. The project was delayed for several reasons, and we have now been advised it will take place over the next two years along the length of Bayers Road from Connaught Avenue to Windsor Street. Those of you who travel Bayers Road might have noticed that power poles were moved in anticipation of the start of this project, and buses were rerouted away from Bayers Road. At the same time as the road work is being done, Halifax Water will be upgrading their transmission water lines.
